What Are Your Career Options After High School?
Getting an education in your desired field is a great way to get started in your career. However, simply having a degree or certificate in your hand is insufficient. There are a plethora of people with degrees out there. To add value to your education, you must take certain steps. In addition, the field you choose after high school will have a significant impact on your career. To determine your career options after high school and make your final decision, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this your passion, or are you enrolling in a course because your friends are?
- Is this a promising career path in this country?
- Can you put in the effort required to finish this course?
- Is your financial situation such that you can study this course?
- What length of course works best for you? (Course lengths can range from 6 months to 5 years.)
By asking these questions, you will become more aware of your situation and will be able to make the best decision.
What Kind Of Degree?
Every year, a large number of students leave school; between 2014 and 2015, the total number of students enrolled in South Africa schools increased by approximately 57000. (1.5 percent ). Every student has the same question: “What comes next?”
After graduating from high school, the first decision is whether to pursue a university degree or diploma, or something along the lines of certificate 1,2,3,4.
Well, as someone who works in education, I can tell you that it is ultimately your work experience after you finish your studies that will shape your career, and that is what matters the most in order to advance your career. Even though your career will be decided by experience, getting the right education is one of the most important steps you will take in your life.
The decision to pursue a degree or diploma is influenced by an individual’s goals and circumstances. For example, if you want to study Masters, you must have at least a four-year graduate degree in many cases, whereas certification or diploma courses may be better if you want to study for a shorter period of time.
There is a common misconception that a degree is superior to a diploma, but this is not always the case. As I previously stated, in many cases, it doesn’t even matter. Indeed, university degrees are somewhat rigid (courses and syllabus remain the same for years), whereas diploma courses are more flexible and frequently updated.
What About Online Learning / Education?
Online learning / education is growing in popularity because it provides a lot of flexibility. Blended learning is even better because it allows you to study online and visit the campus once in a while to attend a class. Furthermore, if you want to pursue distance education, these courses allow you to study from anywhere. You are not required to attend a single class. It is possible to study and take exams online.

Having said that, both a degree and a diploma are acceptable. Even certificate 3 and certificate 4 courses are excellent places to begin your career.
Aged care courses, child care courses, and commercial cookery courses are among the most common short courses I’ve seen in South Africa.
If you are technical person, then why not go for a social media marketing course or learn SEO (Search Engine Optimization). These two fields are relatively new and have a large potential in the marketing world. Many companies are looking for social media or SEO experts. Having a specialty in a niche market is one of the best things you can do for your career.
Accounting, business, and leadership management are some of the other popular post-secondary career options. When students choose these courses, they typically pursue a diploma or a degree.
One advantage of these short courses is that many government-funded courses or programs are available to help students. In South Africa, some of these programs, such as TVET FEE-HELP, help eligible students pay for all or part of their tuition costs while studying TVET with an approved TVET-FEE HELP provider.
I understand that choosing the right course or career field after high school can be a daunting task, especially when there are so many options. Too many options, as it is said, can lead to “choice paralysis”!
You should do your research both online and offline before making a decision about your career options after high school. And, once you’ve made the decision, work hard to make that decision a success so that you can land your dream job in the future.
