About NSFAS Bursary

The National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a Government bursary aimed at helping students who do not have enough money to pay for their studies in universities or TVET colleges in South Africa. NSFAS fund students who come from families that earn income of less than R350 000.

What do NSFAS covers?

NSFAS bursary covers the amount of accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials that students may need during the year. When we talk about accommodation, we mean a place where the NSFAS beneficiary will be staying during study time. In terms of transport Nsfas gives students who travels 40 km from the institution the amount of R7 500 per annum for transport.

NSFAS Requirements And Financial Eligibility Criteria

  • South African national (foreign students do not apply)
  • Applicants who meet the academic criteria for an undergraduate degree at a public university or TVET college
  • Previous candidates with an application reference number should not apply again.
  • For the present academic year, I am NOT a grantee of any NSFAS money (only unfunded students)

Only students from one of the following fields of study are accepted for postgraduate studies:

  • Bachelor of Technology in Architecture / Architectural Technology
  • Bachelor of Technology in Biokinetics, Biomedical Technology/Biotechnology
  • Education Postgraduate Certificate
  • Accounting Postgraduate Diploma
  • LLB (Bachelor of Laws)

To apply for a TVET college bursary nsfas:

  • Enrolled in a South African public TVET college
  • Applied for the National Certificate (vocational)
  • Registered in select NATED Report 191 programs, such as N1-N6 in engineering and N4-N6 in all other professions.

How To Apply for NSFAS Bursary Online?

NSFAS Funding Application

1. To apply for NSFAS you need to first register online as a user on myNSFAS / re-register a myNSFAS account

  • Visit www.nsfas.org.za
  • Click on “myNSFAS” TAB
  • Then Click on “Register
  • Tick the box to allow NSFAS to verify your documents / details
  • After that then you can enter your “ID number” on the space
  • Type in your “Full names and surname” as appear on your ID book
  • Then follow by typing your email address
  • Confirm your email address
  • Then type your cell phone number which is active
  • Create your password (Please don’t forget the password)
  • Confirm it (password)
  • Upload your ID copy
  • Then click on Register
  • After that an OTP will be sent to your cell phone number and email address (Kindly note that the
  • OPT will expire after 24 hours)
  • Type in OPT, then click submit button
  • Then you have completed the registration

2. After you complete the registration, you click the “APPLY” TAB, this will direct you to the online application form
